Fujisawa Ukiyo-e Museum (藤澤浮世絵館) & Fujisawa City Art Space (藤沢市アートスペース)

There is a small museum displaying ukiyo-e (浮世絵), a type of Japanese woodblock printing art, called Fujisawa Ukiyo-e Museum (藤澤浮世絵館) on the 7th floor of the Cocco Terrace Building, close to Terrace Mall Shonan and the Tsujido Station.  On the 6th floor of the same building is the Fujisawa City Art Space (藤沢市アートスペース), an exhibition space for modern art.  Both are run by the City of Fujisawa.

Ukiyo-e flourished during the Edo Era (1603 ~ 1868) and is said to be one of the major factors that started the Japonisme art movement in Europe in the 19th century influencing many artists, including Vincent van Gogh.  Katsushika Hokusai (1760? ~ 1849) and Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 ~ 1858) are among the well-known ukiyo-e artists worldwide.

In 1980, Mr. Fumiaki Kure, the former president of Nihon University, donated his ukiyo-e collection to the City of Fujisawa to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the municipalization. Since then, the city has collected ukiyo-e related to Fujisawa which are on exhibit at the Fujisawa Ukiyo-e Museumalong with related materials including old postcards and drawings.
