It is said that the Buddhist temple of Honren-ji (本蓮寺) was founded in 595 by the monk, Gigen. The temple was rebuilt in November 1184 by Minamoto no Yorikomo. In 1271, Nichiren rested here after the Takinokuchi Persecution.
