Oiso Joyama Park (大磯城山公園)

View of Mt. Fuji from National Route 1 at Oiso Joyama Park

The Prefectural Oiso Joyama Park (県立大磯城山公園), in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, opened in 1987 on the site of what used to be the villa of the Mitsu family that founded the Mitsui Group.  This area is now called the Former Mitsui Villa District (旧三井別邸地区).

In 2013, the Former Shigeru Yoshida Residence District (旧吉田茂邸地区) opened.

The two districts are divided by National Route 1.

Former Mitsui Villa District

In 1898, Takamine Mitsui, head of the Mitsu family, built his villa "Jyohzansoh (城山荘)" in this area.  In 1923, the building suffered damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake and was rebuilt in 1933.  The building was demolished in 1970.  Photos of Jyozansoh are posted on the Oiso Municipal Museum's website.

The Koiso Castle (小磯城) used to stand in this area.  It is said that the castle fell into the hands of the enemy in 1477.

Maple Square (もみじの広場)

This area is the Japanese garden surrounding the pond, Fudoh-ike (不動池).  Every year during autumn, there is a light-up event.

Observation Deck (展望台)

From this observation deck, visitors can enjoy the view of Sagami Bay and Mount Fuji.  There is also a sculpture of a boat named "Tabidachi (たびだち)," with a small shrine in the back, next to the deck.

Teahouse "Johzan-an" (茶室「城山庵」)

The current teahouse "Johzan-an" was built based on the teahouse "Joan (如庵)" that used to stand in the area.  Joan was relocated to Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture in 1972.

Kitakura (北蔵) & Higashikura (東蔵)

Kitakura and Higashikura are the only buildings, from the days the property was in the hands of the Mitsui Family, still standing in the park.  Kitakura is available to be used as a gallery space.

Tunnel Tombs (横穴墓)

There are a couple of tunnel tombs or catacombs in the southeastern part of this district.  A replica of the tomb is on display inside the Oiso Municipal Museum.

Former Shigeru Yoshida Residence District

Shigeru Yoshida (1878~1967) was one of the longest-serving prime ministers of Japan.  This residence is where he spent most of his time from 1945 until his death.

There is a rose garden next to the parking lot.  The garden was organized in 1961.  It was reduced to its current size in 1979 when the Japanese prime minister Masayoshi Ohira and US President Jimmy Carter held a summit meeting at this residence.

Between the rose garden and his residence is a gate called Kabuto-mon (兜門) built in a traditional Japanese style.  It was built in 1954 to commemorate the Treaty of San Francisco which he signed as the Japanese prime minister.

Inside the gate is his former residence, currently open as a museum, and a Japanese garden.  Next to the Japanese garden is a small temple building, Shichiken-do (七賢堂).

His bronze statue stands at the south edge of the park.  Visitors can view the Sagami Bay from this spot.
