Shinmei Jinja (神明神社)

There is a Shinto shrine called Shinmei Jinja (神明神社)*, a kenmu-sha of Tsurumine Hachimangu, standing along National Route 1, close to the ruins of the Former Sagami River Bridge, in the Shimomachiya District of Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture.

Monument of Seimei Ido
It is unclear when the shrine was founded, but it is said it was built during the Kansei era.  It enshrines the deities of Amaterasu-Okami (天照大神) and Oyamakui-no-kami (大山咋神).

It is said Abe no Seimei, a prominent onmyoji during the Heian period, drank from a watering well in the shrine, later called Seimei Ido (清明井戸).  The well does not exist anymore, but a stone monument stands where it used to be.

* Although the sign at the shrine states the name of Shinmei Okami (神明大神), the official shrine name registered with Jinja Honcho (Association of Shinto Shrines) is Shinmei Jinja (神明神社).
