Joken-ji (浄見寺)

Joken-ji (浄見寺)

Close to the Chigasaki City Museum and right across the street from the Former Residential House of the Wadas is the Buddhist temple (Jodo Shu) of Joken-ji (浄見寺).  Joken-ji was founded by Ooka Tadayo (大岡忠世), the third head of the Ooka clan, in 1611, according to the sign placed near the temple's entrance.  However, the websites of the city of Chigasaki and the Chigasaki City Museum say the temple was founded by Ooka Tadamasa (大岡忠政), the second head, to mourn the death of his father, Ooka Tadakatsu (大岡忠勝).

The temple has served as a bodaiji of the Ooka Family and has 58 graves of 13 generations of the family, including Ooka Tadasuke (大岡忠相), commonly known as Ooka Echizen (大岡越前) due to the TV series.

The city of Chigasaki holds the Ooka Echizen Festival every year.
